Persuasive Essay Topics: How To Find An Interesting Question

When you are given a persuasive essay assignment, this means that you should prepare a piece of writing that convinces the readers about a certain idea. Persuasive skills are useful in daily life, so you should spend enough time working on your assignments and improving your writing and rhetoric skills. To create a strong paper, you should choose a topic about which you have an opinion. This should be an idea that you believe in.

The first step that you should take is finding an interesting question that you can answer in your persuasive essay. Many students develop an argument they support. Then, they formulate a topic question, correct it, and narrow down if necessary. Remember that a typical paper consists of five paragraphs, including three body paragraphs. Each body paragraph should contain an idea that supports your point of view and helps you answer your study question.

To get inspired and come up with a good persuasive essay topic, you should use the following guidelines:

  • Choose something that you really care about.
  • It’s a good idea to brainstorm the topic ideas that you believe in. It takes lots of time to develop a brand new argument and then decide which side of it you support and why. So, teachers advise their students to select persuasive paper ideas that they are interested in and know which side of the argument they would rather be on.

  • Pick a controversial problem.
  • Don’t hesitate to choose a topic that has a complexity and lots of depth, so you’ll be able to raise an interesting question and provide your own position. It’s indeed easier to write a persuasive essay when you have something that you can study deeply and find plenty of controversial materials about.

  • Consider opposing viewpoints when brainstorming your study question.
  • If you procrastinate and can’t come up with a good persuasive essay topic, you might consider opposing positions. For example, you want to write about legalization of gay marriage, so you should brainstorm the arguments against this. In case you find too many arguments against, you should reconsider the idea.

  • Watch the news, go to a documentary movie, or read a scholarly article.
  • In order to find an interesting study question, you should learn something new. For instance, many controversial questions are raised in the news and TV shows. It also makes sense to find a scholarly article about the subject you’re interested in and discuss the argument provided there.
